Winter “Camo” Chullo-style hat
Description: Extra cold and sound proofing ear flaps make for the perfect winter hat for term babies and quieter environment for sound-sensitive preemies.
SIZE:
Preemie (S-M-L), Term (NB, 3-6 mos, 12 mos)
Gauge: In stockinette, 16 st x 24 rows = 4” square
Skill Level: Intermediate
Materials:
Size 8 (US) double pointed needles
worsted weight soft yarn
Blunt yarn needle
4 stitch markers
Dividing over 3-4 double pointed needles, cast on over two needles:
(35, 40, 45) (50, 55, 60)
Row 1: Knit around, placing marker after last stitch to mark row beginnings
Row 2: Purl around
Row 3-6: Continue alternating Knit and Purl rows.
Row 7: Knit around. Continue to Knit continuously until hat measures (3”, 3.5”, 4.5”) (5”, 5.5”, 6.5”) from bottom. End at the beginning of a new row.
Begin decrease:
Row 1: Knit 2 tog, K 3….repeat across row. (28, 32, 36) (40, 44, 48)
Row 2: Knit around row
Row 3: Knit 2 tog, K2…repeat across row. (21, 24, 27) (30, 33, 36)
Row 4: Knit around row
Row 5: Knit 2 tog, K 1…repeat across row. (14, 16, 18) (20, 22, 24)
Row 6: Knit 2 tog, repeat across row, knitting as tightly as possible. (7, 8, 9) (10, 11, 12)
Row 7: Knit 2 tog, repeat across row, knitting as tightly as possible. (On smallpreemie, large preemie, and 3/6 mos, there will be 1 single stitch knitted at the end of the row due to odd number count.) (4, 4, 5) (5, 6, 6)
Cut 10” tail and threading onto a blunt yarn needle, thread tail through remaining stitches and pull tightly through to underside of hat. Secure and weave in all thread ends.
