A meal, however simple, is a moment of intersection. It is at once the most basic, the most fundamental, of our life's activities, maintaining the life of our bodies; shared with others it can be an occasion of joy and communion, uniting people deeply.
While attending a marriage seminar on communication, Wally and his wife Carolyn listened to the instructor declare, "It is essential that husbands and wives know the things that are important to each other." He addressed the men, "Can you describe your wife's favorite flower?"
Wally leaned over, touched Carolyn's arm gently and whispered, "King Arthur White Whole Wheat, isn't it?"
Inside me there's a thin person struggling to get out, but thankfully, I can usually shut the bitch up with cookies and cake.
So.........in light of the above quote, how do you think my diet week went last week? Actually, it went well from the point of view of eating lots of fruits and veggies but not so good from Friday night on and I weigh in on Sunday. Friday night was hideously busy at work and I was hurting bad when I left. I was almost bawling walking out to my car which is, I usually say a mile, but it honestly is at least a half mile from our dept to employee parking lot, maybe close to a mile. That last part killed me. So what did I do? Go home and immediately ice my knee? Oh heavens no. I used the excuse that I hadn't had time to eat dinner to allow myself to drive through Taco Bell but I know it was more about comforting myself than refueling. I was too tired to be eating for hunger.
Then Saturday was Sydney's birthday so there was cake. I don't crave cake but I do still like vanilla when it's sitting there in front of me. Then that trip to the Japanese Steakhouse didn't do me any favors either. Sure, I brought home a huge doggy bag but still. Have you really paid attention to how much butter they cook with? It's a heart attack in the making just looking at the cart.
Then Jordan, who was so helpful and lovely, wanted to make pancakes for breakfast on Sunday. Sure, I should have said no and I did only eat one, but I didn't want to hurt her feelings even though it wasn't helping my scale numbers. At that point, what's the point anyway, you know? It was weigh in day.
The bad news is I didn't lose any weight this week but the good news I didn't gain back any either so I'll take what I can get and try to feel lucky about it.
